The blog, a term coined in 1997 that combines the words “web” and “log,” became popular and more widely used by individuals in the late 1990’s. However, the trend of social media and its value to businesses as a marketing tool, has more and more companies blogging. The question is are they doing it right?
Here at Holmes, we are always looking for new and better ways to market our clients, as well as ourselves. We’ve recently looked at our company blog and asked what we could do differently to really make it a powerful source of promotion and education. In researching, we found a great article on www.forbes.com called simply, Why Should Companies Blog? The author, Ken Makovsky provides a helpful list of some reasons for using a blog to promote your company.
· Humanizing the company
· Enhancing visibility
· Building credibility and trust
· Establishing industry expertise
· Promoting products and policies
· Addressing important issues
· Generating leads … and business
· Defending the company against its critics

Personal blogs are journals that promote personal growth, and business blogs in turn promote company growth. A blog is a conversation starter, and any comments left by followers allow you to see the world through the eyes of your consumers. (Yes, that’s you!) Those followers are a passionate community of individuals who appreciate your company’s brand and mission, and it is as important to share with them, as it is to listen to them.
So…Holmes continues to live by our values as we think about, further execute, and continuously improve our blog AND MORE! Watch for exciting improvements, and in the mean time, comment and share with us your blogging experiences. Do you blog? Personally or for your company, or both? Why do you do it? Is it serving the purpose you hoped it would?
